Dear friends,

Early July 2025

I just came in from the chicken coop after having pulled up roots of potato vines which were threatening to take over my yard. As I worked, I thought about what I wanted to tell you and about my set list for our next Hurricane Relief Concert already scheduled for January 17, 2026. Can you believe that? Hurricanes are coming, and we want to be ready to bring help and hope for whomever and whatever may come.
Originally, I wrote this song for a friend who was bracing for the hit of Hurricane Florence which hit North Carolina on Sept 14, 2018. My friend was remaining in town “and battening down hatches” at the time because she was a caregiver to a woman who was dying, and they had to remain in town instead of escaping the path of Hurricane Florence due to the medical complications involved. Together they weathered that storm…and together we’ll weather what storms may come.
This song’s debut was at our first ERD fundraiser at Christ Episcopal Church this January. The LONG HAUL LOVE concert delivered generous funds as disaster relief to our neighbors and survivors of the TWO Hurricanes of the 2024 season, (Helene Sept 25. And Hurricane Milton October 10, 2024).
Knowing that hurricane season is just around the corner, Christ Church is sponsoring Rachel & Friends as together they are preparing to share this song again on January 17th, 2026. Mark your calendar for an ENCORE OF LOVE and stay with us for more information so you can reserve your seat. It’s going to be a full house!
Thanks for being a friend.
Rachel

Together We’ll Weather the Storm

A hurricane’s bearing down, shredding our haven’s calm
A mighty Cat Four, storming our door.
Its fury’s been fed, we’re helpless with dread.
We’re holding close those we cherish most.

We’ve battened down hatches, sealed windows, locked latches.
We’re laying low and staying close,
Together we’ll weather the storm.

Outside our window across the lawn, grows a native wild forest, an oak hammock strong
With low hanging limbs, roots engirdled to last,
Withstanding storms endured in the past.

We’ve battened down hatches, sealed windows, locked latches.
We’re laying low and staying close
Together we’ll weather the storm.

Wild winds, high water and storm surge debris, raging devastation on all that we see.
Our strength may shake and sway like these trees,
But our arms stay locked in hard times like these,
Our hammered resolve remains like these trees.

We’ll ride out this weather now we’ll find a way
through this dark storm there dawns a new day.
We’ll each lend a hand, shared strength always stands,
dividing sorrows, rebuilding tomorrow.

We’ve battened down hatches, sealed windows, locked latches.
We’re laying low and staying close,
Together we’ll weather the storm.
Together we’ll weather the storm.
The storm.
